Believing in the Gospel (Podcast)

In this episode, we discuss what it means to believe the gospel, following up on our previous episode discussing recent debates on the blogosphere about what the gospel is and isn’t (“Talking about the Gospel”). Building upon that previous conversation, Amber Bowen, John Anthony Dunne, and Logan Williams discuss binary thinking that impairs how we conceive of what faith is, and then address more helpful ways beyond that restrictive way of thinking that is more in line with how the Greek words for “faith” (πίστις; pistis) and “believing” (πιστεύω; pisteuō) were used and understood in the New Testament—as expressions of trust.

  1. Hi! I’m a new listener of your podcast and I’m really enjoying it tremendously. It’s a big help as I think through and look to articulate the Gospel ministry to my community. ¡Gracias mil!

I was hoping you could help me find a good RESOURCE. 🙂 On May 6, your show was on “Believing the Gospel” (my favorite so far!). In it, Dr. Logan Williams discussed the Greek use of the words for “faith” (πίστις; pistis) and “believing” (πιστεύω; pisteuō), as expressions of trust.

Could you point me to a RESOURCE/S that I could consult and that would help investigate further Dr. Logan Williams’ argument of “faith/believing” as “trust”? That would be tremendously helpful for me.

Thank you again for all your hard work and vision for this podcast. It’s a tremendous blessing and encouragement…and useful in my pastoral ministry.

    ¡Gracias y bendiciones!

Hey Victor, many thanks for listening and for leaving us such an encouraging note here! I’ll let Logan jump in if he’d like, but I can certainly recommend Teresa Morgan’s Roman Faith and Christian Faith: Pistis and Fides in the Early Roman. Empire and Early Churches (OUP, 2015). It’s a fabulous book!
