Depicting Jesus in Jesus Films with Dr. Richard Walsh (Podcast)

In this episode of our Jesus film series, we turn to discuss the art and theology that informs depictions of Jesus with Dr. Richard Walsh, who is Womack Professor of Philosophy and Religion and the Co-Director of the Honors Program at Methodist University. He’s also the author of a number of books on Jesus films, including Reading the Gospels in the Dark (Trinity Press International) and, more recently with Jeffrey Staley, Jesus, The Gospels, and Cinematic Imagination (T&T Clark). Other the course of our conversation, Dr. Walsh addresses some of the historic tensions behind depicting Jesus throughout cinematic history between depicting Jesus as more divine versus more human, more historically accurate versus more artistically resonant, more stoic versus more personable, etc. We also discuss this topic briefly in relation to iconoclastic concerns as well as Orthodox iconography. Most notably, Dr. Walsh situates Jesus in the place of the “Monster” in horror films, which leads to some fascinating discussion. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Stephanie Kate Judd, and Rev. Daniel Parham.

    Hello Br Richard Walsh.
I remember years ago the class you and your brother used to teach at the Fort Union ward or stake. Those were wounderful classes and younger days.
Today a very kind man at Walmart offered to help me with a huge cart of food to load into my car. I recognized him right away as your brother and teacher of the religion class many years ago. He told me about your teaching this class on line, so I looked you up.

I did so to ask a particular favor. Please tell your kind brother that God knows the goodness of his heart in helping an old grandma like me. I thought of his generosity during my drive all the way home. Tell him please that I know that Heaven is going to be filled with people just like him, with his sweet sense of humor and kindness. I don’t remember his first name. Maybe if you want you can share that with me. I just prayed blessing on him all the way home and hope he finds joy in life from Heaven for his goodness.

Much appreciation if you can pass this message forward. I just appreciated his kindness so much today. It lifted a burden I was carrying just to have someone so kind helping me.

    God bless you both.

    Donna
